[Seminar] Enhancing detection of pest species using environmental DNA/RNA in biosecurity
Speaker: Dr Alejandro Trujillo-Gonzalez, Principal Scientist, National eDNA Reference Centre, University of Canberra, Canberra, ACT, Australia
Hosted by: Dr. Roger Huerlimann, OIST Marine Climate Change Unit
Abstract: Globalisation is increasing the rate and complexity of trade connections between countries. This increasing network of interactions, in hand with the movement of both people and goods, puts countries at risk of invasive pests and diseases, constraining their capacity to protect economic, ecological, and social livelihood. Tackling the increasing influx of invasive pests and pathogens requires the use of biosecurity measures within diverse methodologies used to detect, eradicate, and minimize the inherent risks of these unwanted species. Meeting ID: 934 4744 8076 Passcode: 458251OIST-Tohoku University Joint Workshop on Biodiversity: From Genes and Species to Ecosystem Services and Resilience
Biodiversity plays a central role in humankind’s interaction with the biosphere, lying at the heart of all ecosystem structure and functioning. Biodiversity describes the variability and connectivity of life across different levels (from bacteria to plants and animals) and dimensions (from genetic to ecological and from taxonomic to functional):
This workshop will bring together practitioners and enthusiasts of biodiversity research from Tohoku University and OIST to illuminate this fascinating theme from multiple angles, with the aim of discovering complementary perspectives and collaborative opportunities.

PUBLIC SPEAKING WORKSHOP WITH ORATORS CLUB - RAM 2022
Imagine you’re about to present at a conference (or symposium, seminar, or panel discussion…). You know your research well and could generally talk about it for hours, but… somehow the setting makes you stumble. Well, whether we like it or not, presenting one’s research in front of an audience is a key skill all scientists need to master. At OIST Orators Club we have found it helpful to practice public speaking in a supportive environment and would like to extend what we’ve learned in the past few years to the rest of the researchers’ community.
Japan Scicom Forum 2022 - Hosted by OIST
Science communication and outreach, especially to global audiences in English, is taking off in Japan. Japan Scicom Forum brings together communicators, writers, scientists, journalists and select experts from abroad to inspire and boost the cohesion of scicomm in Japan, learn new skills and inform the community with best practices. Keynote talks will reflect on research-media interactions from the perspectives of both scientists and press professionals. Workshops will provide hands-on training to support communicators and scientists working in Japan as they engage in global outreach. Open discussion and networking opportunities are spread over the program. Registration is free and the event will be in English.
This year, OIST is honored to host virtually this event.

Faculty Lunchtime Seminar (Prof. Qing Liu)
Title: Convexity in Partial Differential Equations
Abstract: It is well known that the notion of convexity plays a key role in optimization, control theory, mathematical economics and many other areas of science. This talk is a friendly introduction to convex analysis for partial differential equations. After going over a few basic properties about convex sets and convex functions, we will focus on the preservation of spatial convexity of solutions, which is one of the most important geometric properties of numerous evolution equations. Several examples will be given. We will also discuss some recent developments on this topic.
This talk is open to everyone at OIST
