[Online] Science Talk-"Learning Journey: Medical Research and Immunology"
Speaker: Gulfiya Kadyrzhanova (Immune Signal Unit)
Gulfiya is a 2nd year PhD student at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology. She is from Kazakhstan and got her bachelor’s degree in medicine (Specialty: General Medicine), and a master’s degree in Molecular Medicine. Currently, she is in the Immune Signal Unit working on T cells.
She has recently started her project and for now, it includes studying CD8+ T cell exhaustion. CD8+ T cells are critical in combat against chronic infection and cancer. And when CD8+ T cells are exposed to continuous antigen stimulation or inflammatory factors, they start to lose their T cell function, and this state is called “exhaustion”. Her long-term goal is to study and elucidate critical factors in the regulation of CD8+ T cell exhaustion.
