OIST Presidential Lecture - "How fish colour their skin: A paradigm for development and evolution of adult patterns"

Seminar Room B250
Where do all of us come from?  How can all of us derive of a single cell?  What is the concert of genes required to generate a multicellular organism?  These questions and more will be addressed by Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard.  She is a pioneer who together with Eric Wieschhaus identified the genetic basis for the development of the fruit fly a fundamental discovery for which the Nobel prize was awarded.  She deciphered the logic of the genes required to control development.  Based on her research a plethora of transcription control genes was subsequently discovered and found to be conserved throughout evolution.  In her talk she will discuss the basic mechanisms that are required to establish a distinct pattern during embryogenesis.

Her research laid the conceptional foundation for our understanding of organ formation and regeneration using the developmental control genes.
