Title: Quantum Foundations: What Is It and Why Do We Need It?
Abstract: When you hear the words “quantum foundations” an image might pop up in your mind: a few old men, sitting in comfy sofas, with their whisky and cigars, wondering how the cat is both dead and alive. And although we all love comfy sofas, quantum foundations goes way further than cats. In this talk I will give you a “bird’s eye view” of the field of quantum foundations (not claiming to be comprehensive – it’s huge!), and why the world needs people to pursue research on these topics.
Profile: Ana Belen Sainz is currently a Group leader at the International Centre for Theory of Quantum Technologies, University of Gdańsk, Poland. Her research interests lie in the intersection of quantum foundations and quantum information theory. She strives to assess the landscape of nonclassical physical theories – some of which may supersede quantum theory – and how they may enable new forms of communication or information processing. Ana Belen is also active in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives, committed to building a safe and diverse scientific community. She received her PhD from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Spain, in 2014, carrying out her PhD thesis at ICFO - The Institute of Photonic Sciences, Spain. Prior to that she completed her MSci in Physics at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba, Argentina. Personal website
