Can lattice disorder drive spin-orbital liquid behaviour?

Spin-liquid behaviour is typically associated with well ordered lattices such as the kagome or pyrochlore. Here we consider whether similar behaviour can be found in lattices with strong disorder, close to the percolation threshold. We consider in particular the family of materials Ba3XSb2O9 (X=Cu, Ni etc.) which are believed to show spin-orbital liquid behaviour. We show that these materials realise a highly disordered lattice structure, and argue that this leads to a state with spin and orbital resonance.
