Rio Kashimoto (OIST PhD Student, Year of 2019)
Rio Kashimoto was born and raised in Kyoto, where she explored her academic career before coming to OIST. She is a PhD student in Marine Eco-Evo-Devo unit of Prof. Vincent Laudet. During her PhD, she assesses genetic perspectives for clown fish hosting giant sea anemone life in Okinawa. She has investigated the occurrence of duplication of fluorescent protein gene in 18 species of coral genomes in Marine Genomics Unit- Prof. Satoh (Co-supervisor). From an early age, she hoped to have a career in (Zoological & Medical) science and evolution. In 2019, she graduated from her master’s degree at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, majoring in Oncology. She is especially interested in understanding and applying genomic novelties that explain the evolutionary success of symbiotic organisms, an important theme behind her PhD thesis. During her free time, she likes running, swimming and traveling.
