This session will be done in Japanese. The program will start off with OIST general introduction, PhD & Research Internship admission process, financial support and student life followed by the panel discussion by 2 OIST PhD students.
Speakers
Rio Kashimoto (OIST PhD Student, Year of 2019)
Rio Kashimoto was born and raised in Kyoto, where she explored her academic career before coming to OIST. She is a PhD student in Marine Eco-Evo-Devo unit of Prof. Vincent Laudet. During her PhD, she assesses genetic perspectives for clown fish hosting giant sea anemone life in Okinawa. She has investigated the occurrence of duplication of fluorescent protein gene in 18 species of coral genomes in Marine Genomics Unit- Prof. Satoh (Co-supervisor). From an early age, she hoped to have a career in (Zoological & Medical) science and evolution. In 2019, she graduated from her master’s degree at Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine, majoring in Oncology. She is especially interested in understanding and applying genomic novelties that explain the evolutionary success of symbiotic organisms, an important theme behind her PhD thesis. During her free time, she likes running, swimming and traveling.
Dan Kozome (OIST PhD Student, Year of 2019)
Dan was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. He received his B.S and M.S degrees in Agriculture at the University of the Ryukyus. He was a research intern at Protein Engineering and Evolution Unit (PI: Assistant Professor Paola Laurino) for three months and decided to pursue his PhD in the Unit. He is currently working on how proteins acquire their function during evolution. He likes doing workouts and playing football. He would like to share his experiences during his Research Internship and PhD life at OIST.
