Annual INO Event "Sustainability and Academia" 

About 25 company representatives arrived to OIST to join the annual INO event. The day started with a startup pitch session where eight selected startups presented their businesses to the OIST research community. This session offered a unique platform for these companies, facilitating potential collaborations and knowledge sharing.The event also included an optional networking session, allowing attendees to engage with the startups at their booths.

Following the pitch, a panel discussion exclusive for INO members featured Prof. Nori Satoh from OIST, Prof. Alex Charalambides from Cyprus University of Technology, and Mr. Kuni Shimoji from EF Polymer, focusing on "sustainability in the environment." The day concluded with a networking dinner at Hotel Monterey, where around 80 attendees, encompassing startups and researchers, gathered for an evening of meaningful interaction and collaboration. This dinner highlighted the day's theme of innovation and community, bringing together diverse minds and ideas.

"Generative AI - How it impacts the world" Seminar & Networking Event

Three speakers from Bain & Company, who has a partnership with Open AI, talked about the impact of generative AI on business.  During the seminar, they shared the possible use cases, and the potential challenges.  There were many questions during the Q&A session, showing the high level of interest in this area.

INO Members Event @OIST

We held our first INO Event at OIST.  Members from 25 companies attended he seminar "Future of Mind, Body, an Environment", featuring Professor Takashi Ikegami (University of Tokyo),  Professor Keiko Kono (OIST), and Professor Pinaki Chakraborty (OIST).  A lively networking dinner ensued at Kafuu Fuchaku Kondo Hotel.

About the Program

Technology Development and Innovation Center (TDIC) celebrates OIST's 10th anniversary with the launch of its first industry affiliates program, the Innovation Network @OIST (INO in-short).  INO is designed for industry partners who are interested in collaborating with OIST and expanding their business network through events.

As the first INO event, TDIC hosts an online panel to discuss how industry can engage better with research institutions and create an innovation ecosystem.  This event is open to everyone.

Confirmed Panelists:

  • Professor Kitano (Integrated Open Systems Unit) is the head of the Systems Biology Institute(SBI), the President and CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories and a Group Director of the Laboratory for Disease Systems Modeling at RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences.

  • Mr. Jonathan Solomon is the CEO of BiomX, a biotech company located in Israel.  After graduating with an MBA with honors from Harvard Business School, he found ProClara (formerly NeuroPhage), a pharmaceutical startup that develops drugs for Alzheimer's disease and which successfully raised $110 million from investors.  

  • Dr. Kohta Satake, is the Founder, Chairman & CEO of CureApp, a medical startup located in Tokyo.  Founded in 2014, CureApp develops applications for digital healthcare and has won numerous startup awards including being named to the 2020 CB Insights Digital Health 150, a list of most innovative digital health startups.  Dr. Satake holds MD, MPH, and MBA.

  • Mr. Gil Granot-Mayer is the Vice President for Technology Development and Innovation.  Prior to joining OIST in February 2021, he was the CEO of Yeda, the technology commercialization company of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.  He holds a law degree and an MBA from Tel Aviv University.

Moderator

  • Ms. Lauren Ha is the Associate Vice President for Technology Development and Innovation.  At TDIC, she is in charge of technical development, intellectual properties, coordination between industry and academia, and license agreement.
