Title: Quantization of folded strings in non-critical dimensions

Speaker: Dorin Weissmann

Abstract: I will talk about some problems that arise when attempting to quantize rotating strings semiclassically, in the critical and non-critical dimensions. The problems are divergences associated with folding points in the string. A rotating closed string is a basic system that suffers from this problem, and I show how we deal with it by treating the fold as a boundary and placing mass terms there. Based on an upcoming paper with J. Sonnenschein.

The event is a great way to get a look at the diversity of the research happening at OIST, and for those who talk, to hone their presentation skills.

Speaker: Dr. Axel Pérez-Obiol, Kochi University of Technology, Japan Abstract: We consider BECs on 1D rings at zero temperature stirred by a link. Their spectrum is theoretically analyzed, consisting in dark and gray solitonic trains, and vortex states comoving with the link. We show how to produce these states by adiabatically stirring the condensate from its ground sate: through specific cycles where the velocity and the strength of the link are gradually tuned. The general properties of the spectrum and cycles are studied through the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a delta-type link and in the comoving frame. A set of specific cycles to excite the BEC are reproduced by simulations of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii with a rotating Gaussian link. More on arXiv:1907.04574.
