Title: Dissection of Branching Morphogenesis and Patterning Mechanisms Underlying
Neurovascular Wiring during Organogenesis
Abstract: The broad, long-term goal of our laboratory is to understand the cellular and molecular dynamics that control the elaborate patterns of branching networks in organ development, with a particular emphasis on two major tubular networks, the vascular and nervous systems, which share several anatomical and functional characteristics, and are often patterned similarly. Advanced imaging techniques and genetic manipulations provide powerful tools to address fundamental questions of branching morphogenesis and patterning of these networks. Our recent discoveries highlight the cellular dynamics and molecular mechanisms underlying i) the neuronal signals such as angiogenic factor VEGF-A and chemokine CXCL12 on arterial differentiation and branching pattern (Dev Cell, 2013) and ii) the vascular signals such as NGF on neuronal guidance (Development, 2013). Our studies provide a unique concept for understanding branching morphogenesis and patterning: blood vessels and nerves take advantage of one another to follow the same path given that these two networks integrate into the various tissues.
