[Webinar] Hurricanes in a Warming World

Friday, March 26, 2021 - 08:30 to 09:30
Zoom link will be provided upon registration

In an article titled, "Slower decay of landfalling hurricanes in a warming world", published in Nature on November 11, 2020, Chakraborty and co-author Lin Li, describe results of their research that suggest that “as the world continues to warm, the destructive power of hurricanes will extend progressively farther inland.”

Join the OIST Foundation to hear directly from Prof. Chakraborty about this important research on how hurricanes are changing in a warming world.

OIST Forum 2021 "Reboot Japan: The nation of science and technology"

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 - 11:45 to Thursday, March 4, 2021 - 13:30
Zoom Webinar

For the past 20 years, Japan has been lagging behind in the transformation of industrial structures through disruptive innovations that have emerged in various parts of the world. In the past, Japan has produced many innovative technologies in high-tech industries and materials, but it is starting to lose sight of the importance of "science and technology" in the rush of businesses.

However, unexpected technologies can only be produced with advancement of science and technology linked to information about markets, businesses, and products. For this reason, reboot of science and technology is a must.

So, what is required for Japan to lead the world again? What does it take for Japan to regain its strength in science and technology?

To find solutions to this major issue, a total of 12 great minds will meet to share their "knowledges.” These members include Dr. Kazuto Ataka, the author of the best-selling book "Shin Nihon (New Japan)," a Nobel Laureate in Physics, Dr. Takaaki Kajita, Dr. Hiroaki Kitano of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, and Dr. Peter Gruss, President of Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST).

The key people from industry, government, and academia will meet at the three-day online conference to discuss issues.
