Description

From Tuesday, January 30, to Thursday, February 29, the photo exhibition “Fascination of Science” by the renowned German photographer Herlinde Koelbl will be shown at the OIST Tunnel Gallery.

Who are the people behind the greatest discoveries of our time? And how would they summarize the essence of their research – in a sketch, formula, or a few words on the palm of their hand?

This exhibition features portraits of 41 Nobel Prize Laureates and famous scientists from Japan and abroad, and an interactive corner for participants to post their own visions. OIST Adjunct Professor Svante Pääbo’s portrait is featured in this exhibition.

The project started in 2020, and since then it has travelled around the world hosted by different museums and research institutions. The exhibition is supported by Germany’s DAAD and DWIH and was recently featured at Miraikan National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Tokyo.

Herlinde Koelbl is one of the most famous German photographic artists. Her work has been presented in numerous exhibitions and she has received many awards, including the Dr. Erich Salomon Award and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

An opening ceremony for the exhibition will take place at 11:00 in the Tunnel Gallery on Tuesday, January 30. Remarks will be made by President Markides, as well as Axel Karpenstein, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the German Centre for Research and Innovation Tokyo (DWIH), Prof. Till Weber, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany in Okinawa. Stefan Speidel, curator of the exhibition, will also be in attendance.
