Quintessential In​troduction to MATLAB Programming

 

The Quantum Systems Unit is announcing the second edition of the Quintessential Introduction series. After 【QI】2, we are proud to introduce Quintessential In​troduction to MATLAB Programming, a two day intensive course with an awkward-to-pronounce acronym introducing PhD students to the numerical computation high-level language of MATLAB. 

 

The two day course will consist of a variety of elements, including interactive lectures where students can test what they are taught at the very instant they are taught, lectures about code structures, coffee breaks, easy exercises, hard exercises, impossible challenges, lectures about how to master the art of graphics, etc. [QI;MP] is designed for people who like to focus completely on one subject for a short time, learn stuff and have a lot of Aha!-moments.  And all of this purely for the love of knowledge and the desire to expand ones horizon. You will not even be burdened with credit from the graduate school.

 

Target demographics

The lectures and tutorials have been designed for any graduate student willing to learn about numerical methods with applications in Biology, Physics or Mathematics, but any researcher in OIST wishing to expand their knowledge is very welcome to register. If too many people are interested in the event, priority will be given to the students and you can rest assured that we will be repeating the event at a later date.

Everyone attending will be expected to bring a laptop running MATLAB. The software can be downloaded from the IT website (we can help). OIST will be switching to a MATLAB global site license in October, no need to worry about that.

Dates, Location & Costs

[QI;MP] will take place over two full days on October 13 and 14, 2013. Both those days are holidays (the 13th is a Sunday and the 14th is Sports Day) which was decided so that the event would not prevent any student from attending their regular classes. [QI;MP] will take place on the OIST main campus (C600, Lab 2) and is completely free.

You are only required to invest your time, your energy, your enthusiasm, your creativity and any spare brain capacity you have available. These two days are not going to be a walk in the park (or on the beach).

If you would like to take part in [QI;MP], whether you can attend or not, please let us know by filling the online form here before Friday, September 20th 2013. This information will be very useful for us to evaluate the general interest in the event. If enough people are interested but cannot come, another [QI;MP] session may be organized at a later date.
