Abstract

Asymptotic methods and perturbation theory are fundamental tools, and widely used in practically every field of the physical and theoretical sciences, from fluid mechanics and medical imaging, to condensed matter physics and string theory.  Despite their ubiquity, however, advances in asymptotic analysis, particular beyond-all-orders asymptotics, has been led by fragmented communities in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and theoretical physics. The intention of this symposium is to bring together a number of such distinct communities and to encourage interaction and knowledge exchange.

The symposium will have a novel format designed to encourage communication amongst specialists in disparate areas. The first week will begin with a number of panorama talks (accompanying other public lectures) on rigorous asymptotics, applications to physical sciences, and asymptotics in geometry and physics. During the symposium, speakers will be encouraged to link their research-level talk with separate introductory talks, designed to communicate the key ideas and language in an accessible way. Discussions and final-day debriefs will also encourage knowledge sharing between disparate fields.

Daily shuttle from the Seaside house to OIST main campus

Please use the OIST shuttle bus service in the morning to get to the main campus. It arrives at 8:42 and 9:00 in front of the Seaside House. In the evening there are buses from OIST Auditorium to Seaside House, e.g. at 18:05 and 18:35.

- there are three shuttle bus lines on weekdays, and one on the weekend.

Daily Taxi Schedule: In the evenings, participants can make use of several taxis that will take them from OIST and Seaside House to the small downtown area of Onna village were many restaurants are located.
Schedule: Every weekday from September 4th to 14th
18:00 OIST Auditorium > Peridot Smart Hotel > Seaside House > Onna village, Moon beach area (near Family Mart)

Return pickup at Family Mart in Onna village at 20:30

All rooms are accessible through the main entrance tunnel via elevator to floor B/C. OIST Lab buildings are connected by tunnel on level B. OIST-ID card is required to access all building except the center building (cafeteria and cafe are open to the public). Please check the map for details.

Conference Banquet and Excursion

We hope all participants will join both the banquet and the excursion (free of charge for invited/registered participants).

Banquet: Thursday, September 7th from 18:30 at Okinawan style restaurant Umusan no Niwa in Onna village (taxis leave OIST at 18:00, return trip from 21:00)

Excursion: Saturday, September 9th from 9:00 until approx. 17:30 by bus. Destinations: Ryukyu Mura (traditional Okinawan village), American Village (lunch), Katsuren castle ruins, Miyagi Ocean road
