Description
Title: Sculpture, Science, and the Art of Getting Lost
Speaker: Randi Renate
Chair: Iliana Mendoza Villafuerte
Abstract: In the studio and the laboratory, artists and scientists design questions to unfold through research, experimentation and curiosity. We form hypotheses and create the right parameters to get lost within, in hopes of discovering something new through trial and error. From rhizomatic structures of architectural theory to radial symmetry in the natural world, I will draw from my own artistic research interests and practice as a sculptor along with previous dialogs with scientists to frame creativity as a way of attunement: a mode of attention that expands problem-solving, arguing that creativity and meandering is not peripheral, but at the heart of research.
Profile: Randi Renate is a multidisciplinary artist who received her MFA in Sculpture from Yale University. Her research-based practice spans sculpture, installation, drawing, and fieldwork. Through nature-inspired designs, her work investigates interconnected relationships among species and the biological, cognitive, and architectural systems that shape them to cultivate oceanic consciousness and environmental advocacy. Renate has exhibited internationally, with recent projects at the Parrish Art Museum in New York, the Sado Arts Festival in Japan, and a permanent installation in Indonesia. Her work has been supported by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, and New York State Council on the Arts.
