Mini Vortex Meeting, Wednesday 5 July
This mini vortex-meeting will focus on recent research and future advances in the study of vortices, rotation and turbulence in superfluids. Studies of quantum turbulence in atomic gas Bose—Einstein condensates is an emerging field, built on extensive experimental and theoretical investigations into the controlled generation and observation of the physics of vortices in atomic and exotic condensates. Due to the controllable nature of Bose-Einstein condensates and simplicity of quantum vortices in comparison with their classical counterparts, this research field has great potential to uncover new insights into quantum turbulence, vortices and superfluidity, in addition to establishing similarities and differences to classical turbulence.

Teatime Thursday 16:30 onwards!
"If afternoon teas had started in the Oligocene Epoch, instead of the seventeenth century, we are convinced that evolution, far from discarding that useful appendage, the tail, would have perfected it. A little hand would have evolved at the end of it — such a one as might hold his saucer, while a gentleman sips from his teacup."
~Contributors' Club, The Atlantic Monthly , October 1917
And if cookies were baked since the Cretaceous era, we would probably have extra limbs to hold onto more of them as well as increased land speed to make it before they run out in the first few minutes.

2nd Briefing Session of Earthquake Countermeasures (June 19th, Mon.); 第2回地震対策説明会の案内 (6月19日(月))
Dear all,
Since 2014, OIST has been promoting earthquake countermeasures by establishing OIST Manual of Earthquake Countermeasure and promoting each Research Unit and Section to be prepared and be part of implementing earthquake countermeasures throughout the University. The 1st Briefing Session was held in 2015 to indicate the basic policy of earthquake countermeasures. FY 2017 will be the last year of three-years project for strengthening earthquake countermeasures and purchasing fixing devices free of charge by budget allocated to OHS section. For this reason, we would like to hold the 2nd Briefing Session to accelerate the consideration and implementation of earthquake countermeasure at Research Unit and Section.
At least one person from each Research Unit and Section will be...
