We are pleased to invite all of you to a seminar on high impact research and publication by Dr. Charles Yokoyama.
Dr. Yokoyama served as Senior Scientific Editor at Neuron and handled more than 1,000 papers. He is currently Director of Research at RIKEN Brain Science Institute. His lecture will focus on research evaluation and planning for high impact publications. This will be an interesting and helpful topic for all OIST members, not just neuroscientists.

Title

Conceptual Foundations for High Impact Research

Abstract
How to conduct and publish research with scientific impact is one of the most critical but elusive questions in science policy. We will discuss how the current research system defines, evaluates, and quantitates impact. Then, we will review the foundations of conceptual knowledge and how conceptual advances within fields form a scientific ontology. In this context, we will debate the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches to research project planning. Finally, we will ask how this perspective can help to create high impact science and education.
 

Biography:
Dr. Charles Yokoyama currently serves as Director for Research Administration at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, where he manages scientific development and communications. Previously, he was Senior Scientific Editor for the journal Neuron in the Cell Press unit of Elsevier. He was a postdoctoral researcher at Cornell University and earned a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, an M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a B.S. from Michigan State University. He is a fourth-generation Okinawan American from Honolulu, Hawaii.
