Title:
Discretizations of Exterior Calculus
Abstract:
Exterior calculus generalizes vector calculus to manifolds of arbitrary dimension. The coordinate independent variant of exterior calculus has proved convenient as a starting point for programming numerical methods for partial differential equations on surfaces and other manifolds. After a brief review of exterior calculus (using vector calculus analogies) I will describe two discretizations: finite element exterior calculus and a more combinatorial discrete exterior calculus. This is an overview talk and the emphasis will NOT be on new results, but rather on conveying the main ideas of these discretizations and their applications.
