Title:

Immersed Boundary Numerical Simulation in Microfluidic Flows

Abstract:

Multiphase flows are present in a large variety of real-world systems and are often central to many processes which impact challenges of societal, medical and economic importance. These flows often involve mass (species), momentum and energy exchange across, possibly contaminated surfactant-laden, interfaces and between bulk phases which may themselves exhibit non-Newtonian rheology or even change phase. Multiphase flows play a central role in ocean-atmosphere greenhouse gas exchange, aerosol and cloud physics, water desalination and treatment. A few other examples include microfluidics, biological flows, suspensions, emulsions, mixing and atomization where detailed understanding of multiphase flow dynamics is necessary.

The crucial commonality among all of these complex multiphase systems is the interface, whether it be between liquid, gas or solid. In this talk I will present an overview of our numerical approach to simulate a large range of such interfacial flows. I will focus on our group’s recent work on a variety of regimes of microfluidic flows and how the use of novel immersed boundary methods helps provide a more detailed understanding of the complex structures that arise.
