Title: Insects and their multi-trophic interactions in natural and experimental forests
Abstract:
It is now accepted in ecology that diversity in lower trophic levels (e.g. plants) begets diversity in higher trophic levels (insect consumers). However, this relationship has mostly been deduced from experimental grasslands. Forests, which...

"Analyzing the Aeroelastic Dynamics of Wind Turbine Rotors in Rapid Pitch-Control Actions" by Prof.Fernando Ponta
Date : March 27 th (Mon), 2017 Time: 3:00pm – 4:00pm Venue: D015 (Lab1, Level D) Speaker: Professor Fernando Ponta (Michigan Technological University)
Title: Analyzing the Aeroelastic Dynamics of Wind Turbine Rotors in Rapid Pitch-Control Actions Abstract: Pitch control comprises a significant proportion of current wind turbine load-control approaches. Collective pitching is used in restricting the overall power generation at high winds, whereas individual pitching has the added advantage of mitigating cyclic loads that are detrimental in fatigue damage of the turbines. Currently, there are many studies on conventional pitching control that account for long-term variations in wind speeds and associated high loads, but a smaller number of studies in short-term pitch action.

"Reversal of a large-scale flow in a randomly forced two-dimensional turbulence in a square domain" Prof.Matsumoto
Date : March 27 th (Mon), 2017 Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm Venue: D015 (Lab1, Level D) Speaker: Prof. Takeshi Matsumoto Department of physics, Kyoto University
Title: Reversal of a large-scale flow in a randomly forced two-dimensional turbulence in a square domain Abstract: When a turbulent flow is somehow sustained in a closed container, a large-scale coherent flow often emerges. Moreover, in some situations, the direction of the large-scale flow changes randomly. A numerical setting for such reversal phenomena in two-dimensional flow was proposed by Molenaar, Clercx and van Heijst (2004). We numerically study the flow due to Molenaar et al. with emphasis on modeling the typical time scale between reversals.

"Universality of oscillating boiling in Leidenfrost transition" by Prof.Tran
Date : March 24 th (Fri), 2017 Time: 3:00pm – 4:00pm Venue: C016 (Lab1, Level C) Speaker: Prof. Tuan Tran (Nanyang Technological University)
Title: Universality of oscillating boiling in Leidenfrost transition
Abstract: The Leidenfrost transition leads a boiling system to the boiling crisis, a state in which the liquid loses contact with the heated surface due to excessive vapor generation. Here, using experiments of liquid droplets boiling on a heated surface, we report a new phenomenon, termed oscillating boiling, at the Leidenfrost transition. We show that oscillating boiling is resulted from the competition between two effects: separation of liquid from the heated surface due to localized boiling, and rewetting. We argue theoretically that the Leidenfrost transition...
