Workshop: Practical tools for managing work, classes, and research amid tragedy (option 1)

Tuesday, November 28, 2023 - 03:00 to 04:15

Lab 4, Floor F, Room 01

Grief and tragedy can affect our personal lives at any moment, and yet we still have to show up at work, class, in the lab, or the office. For some, work and class can be a welcome distraction and distance from the realities in our lives. For others, professional obligations and being able to perform optimally become difficult to navigate.

Participants in this session will develop a personal action plan and practical toolkit for resilience in their daily professional setting. This is meant to be a facilitated, mostly-independent reflective space with some opt-in group engagement. Participants will have opportunities to engage in partner or small group discussion if they wish, or they can dedicate the entire session to independent reflection. Participants are not expected to disclose their situation unless they choose to do so.

This session is open to OIST administrative staff, students, and researchers. Due to the potentially sensitive contexts of our discussions, we will limit the number of participants to 10-15 slots to maintain a comfortable setting. Participants will receive community agreements to encourage a supportive and respectful environment. The session will be conducted in English.

Lab 4, Floor F, Room 01

This workshop will be facilitated by Kristin Macapagal, Program Director for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Please bring items that you use for personal processing, such as journals, your laptop, or headphones if they help you concentrate during independent reflection.

Cautionary note: There may be brief references to difficult situations related to loss, current events, and many types of painful challenges in people's personal lives. While the session is not meant for discussing those specific situations in depth, we wish to notify participants to be prepared that emotional topics may be touched upon.

This session is not intended to be a substitute for professional mental health services. If you are in need of therapeutic assistance for mental health concerns, please contact our colleagues at Ganjuu Wellbeing Services.

REGISTER HERE (registration closes Monday, November 27)

This same workshop will be offered again Friday, December 15 from 12:00pm-1:15pm.

Note to registered event participants:

Some parts of the session will be dedicated to independent reflection. The facilitator may play low music in the background, but if you wish to bring your own headphones to listen to something that is meaningful to you during the dedicated reflection periods, you are encouraged to do so. The facilitator will provide an auditory and visual signal when the group is reconvening.
