Title: Tensionless Strings and Compactification

Abstract:

In the seminar, I aim to discuss tensionless bosonic string theory both at the classical and quantum level. In the classical theory, the worldsheet metric degenerates and the 3d Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) algebra arises as the residual symmetry on fixing the tensionless equivalent of the conformal gauge. In the quantum regime, the physical state condition for different representation of BMS algebra admits three distinct quantum vacua. I will discuss circle compactification of tensionless bosonic string theory and obtain mass spectrum for each of the vacua.
