Post-Event Report: "Adapting Basic Spectroscopic Research to Commercial Medical Devices" by Prof. Swartz

 
The seminar titled "Adapting Basic Spectroscopic Research to Commercial Medical Devices: Lessons Learned from EPR Measurements of Molecular Oxygen in Tissues," was presented by Prof. Harold Swartz on 19 September at OIST. Prof. Swartz, who has authored or co-authored over 550 publications, six books and numerous patents, focused on the transition from research to entrepreneurship and fostered a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing and networking.
The seminar focused on the application of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology to the measurement of tissue oxygen levels and the challenges and successes in developing EPR for practical human use, particularly for oxygen and radiation exposure measurements. Prof.  Swartz shared his unique approach to interdisciplinary collaboration and translating scientific advances into practical tools for broader market applications.
 
The seminar also included engaging discussions and a panel discussion where participants had the opportunity to explore the topic in more depth. Dr Ryohei Yoshida and Dr Angela Ares Pita from the OIST Innovation Team provided an overview of the support and services available through the OIST Innovation and Proof of Concept Programme. This programme aims to help researchers navigate the path from academic research to commercial development, providing guidance and resources to bridge the gap between scientific discovery and practical application. 
 
In addition, Dr. Lokesh Agrawal and David Simpson, founder and CEO of Watasumi, shared their personal experiences of making the transition from researcher to entrepreneur. Their insights highlighted the challenges and opportunities that researchers can face when exploring the commercialisation of their work.
 
Both Professors Swartz and Flood expressed their admiration for the support OIST provides to researchers who wish to become entrepreneurs. They were impressed by the Institute's commitment to fostering an environment that enables the translation of scientific breakthroughs into real-world solutions and commercial products.
The seminar provided a valuable platform for participants to gain insights into the practical applications of cutting-edge research, as well as the resources and support available at OIST to facilitate the transition from academia to entrepreneurship. The event was well received, with active participation and engaging discussions among the participants.
