Research and Development of In-Space Transportation Systems for
Small Spacecraft’s and CubeSats’ Applications

Abstract:

With the rapid development of private space companies, ridesharing to space - i.e.
launching multiple satellites into the same orbit using a single rocket - has become the
most common way to send satellites into space. Nowadays, a propulsive solution able to
routinely perform orbit transfer is nonexistent. There are no safe and mid-thrust
propulsion systems that rideshare satellites for traveling the “last mile” to more desirable
orbits. In this scenario, hybrid propulsion, a technology extremely compatible with
humans, has been intensively investigated. Hybrid rockets can be miniaturized for
CubeSats’ maneuvers providing a solution for challenging operations such as post-
deploying control, formation flying, and de-orbiting.

Biography:

Giuseppe Gallo, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, College of Engineering, Manoa, Hawaii
Dr. Gallo is an Aerospace Engineer and Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Rocket Propulsion at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, United States. He is leading the Hawaii Rocket Propulsion Laboratory with 10 lab members. He
was a post-doctoral researcher of the Rocket Propulsion Laboratory at Hokkaido University.
He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Naples “Federico II”. He performed many experiments on hybrid rocket engines, liquid rocket engines, and monopropellant thrusters.
He elaborated physical and numerical models, which led to several peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and a patent.
He took part in several successful projects, enabling the official kick-off of Letara Space Ltd., a start-up based at Hokkaido University.
