Abstract:

The invention of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) has revolutionized the way we access and study the world of individual atoms and molecules adsorbed on surfaces. Four decades later, the vigorous evolution of scanning probe techniques continues. One of the most significant steps in this evolution has been the development of microscopes capable of operating in ultra-high vacuum conditions, high magnetic fields, and temperatures as low as a few tens of milliKelvin. In my talk, I will present the experimental results obtained over the last years in the low-temperature SPM group of Peter Grünberg Institute-3 at Forschungszentrum Jülich in order to map out the recent process of development and proliferation of functionalized SPM probes, which is now turning the SPM into a versatile tool for studying quantum materials and nanostructures.
