Description

OIST Innovation supports researchers, students, and staff in moving ideas from the lab toward real-world impact. However, many students are unsure when they can get involved, whether they need their own startup idea, or how innovation activities connect to their future career paths.

This session is designed to make those pathways clearer.

In 45 minutes, we will introduce what OIST Innovation does and highlight the many ways students can engage with us, whether they are interested in entrepreneurship, technology licensing, industry collaboration, or simply learning more about how research becomes useful beyond the lab.

The session will include examples of different innovation pathways, such as:

  • Researchers earning royalties through licensed technologies
  • OIST technologies being developed into devices or products for companies
  • Students joining researcher-led commercialization projects
  • OIST alumni moving into innovation-related careers
  • Researchers becoming startup founders, Chief Technology Officers, Chief Science Officers, or startup team members
  • Students exploring innovation through projects outside their primary research topic (iGEM)

A key part of the session will introduce Innovator’s Toolbox, OIST Innovation’s commercialization education program led by Josh Green. Josh will join in person to explain how the program works, who it is for, and how students can participate even if they are only beginning to explore commercialization or startup pathways.

Participants will also learn about:

  • When and how students may be able to apply for Proof of Concept funding
  • Ways to participate in PARKS and researcher-led projects
  • How to join Innovation activities without having their own startup idea
  • Why protecting intellectual property matters and why researchers should be careful about disclosing new technology too early
  • Where to find OIST Innovation Open Hours for informal questions and support

This session is open to all OIST students and researchers who are curious about innovation, commercialization, startups, or career pathways beyond traditional academic research. No prior experience or startup idea is required.

Come with questions. Curiosity is enough.
