Electrophysiological and computational investigations of cell ensembles

Abstract

A cell ensemble (CE), a spatiotemporal spiking activity often detected statistically in electrophysiological experiment, is hypothesized to represent mental or perceptual entities. In this informal talk, we report our recent experimental and computational investigations of the properties of CEs.  First, we discuss that reactivation of CEs associated with rat’s motor skill learning occurs in both REM and slow-wave sleep (SWS), in contrast to the evidence that SWS is a preferred window for reactivation of explicit memory.  Second, we discuss how the number of CEs is influenced by different STDP rules: add-STDP and log-STDP. We report that the log-STDP rule produces more CEs than the add-STDP rule in the cortex simulations, whereas the opposite is true for the hippocampal CA1 simulations.
