Toshihiko Honkura, MBA (co-founder)　- President and CEO, Quantum Biosystems

A co-founder of Quantum Biosystems Inc., Toshihiko represents the company as both president and CEO. After a genome research project at the University of Tokyo, he went on to gain ten years’ hands-on experience in business management and investment analysis as a manager at McKinsey & Company and the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), a public-private Japanese fund. He has a master’s degree in Analytical Biochemistry from the University of Tokyo and an MBA from Columbia University. The scientific and business management acumen he brings to the team affords the company excellent and tested leadership.

“Bridging science and business – how to set up a global start-up from a technology seed in Japan”

As everyone recognizes, Japan needs innovation now more than ever. However, technology driven start-ups have not been the main engine of innovation in Japan. One of the reasons could be that the value of good technology seeds in Japan is not fully realized as science transitions to business. The speaker will address his experience as a founder of a global start-up, Quantum Biosystems, which was founded on Japanese seed technology developed at Osaka University. He will also share his views on the keys to successfully launch a technology-driven start-up, together with opportunities and challenges.

東京大学大学院情報理工学研究科特任助手としてヒトゲノム解析等の研究に従事。その後、国内証券会社にてエクイティアナリスト、マッキンゼー＆カンパニー マネージャ、産業革新機構ディレクターを務め、経営支援、投資事業分野において10年以上のビジネス経験を持つ。東京大学理学系大学院化学専攻修士、米国コロンビア大学にてMBA取得。

誰もが認識しているように、現在ほど日本でイノベーションが必要とされているされてる時代はありません。一方で、技術系ベンチャーが、そのようなイノベーションの中心の役割を果たしていないのも周知の事実です。一つの要因として、良い大学発技術シーズがあったとしても、サイエンスからビジネスへ移行する過程でその価値がうまく引き出せていないことがあげられます。本講演では、日本の技術シーズをもとに、グローバルなベンチャー企業クオンタムバイオシステムズを設立した経験をもとに、日本発グローバルベンチャーを設立するための鍵となる要因や、可能性や課題についてお話をします。
