Summary
Nanofluidics has become an active research topic, attracting researchers from chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. Advances in this field stand to have a significant impact in industrial, medical and environmental applications in the near future. In particular, flows of molecular suspensions at the nanometer scale play an important role in many biological, chemical, and physical systems. At such small scales, the presence of Brownian effects, surface tension and wetting effects, and hydrodynamic interactions between molecular entities and nanostructures from the device lead to behavior that is very different from what is observed at larger scales. As a result, nanoscale devices offer the possibility to explore new phenomena and functionalities by taking advantage of the specific couplings occurring at small length scales.
 

This mini-symposium aims to provide a singular opportunity for the most prominent researchers in nanofluidics to: (a) present their most recent research breakthroughs; (b) discuss the most recent trends in nanofabrication technologies and design tools to achieve miniaturization, integration, automation and parallelization of nanofluidic devices; (c) participate in a panel discussion on the challenges, opportunities, and barriers to R&D effort in nanofluidics. Additionally, it is intended to serve as a platform for initiating collaborations between researchers at OIST and world experts in both nanofabrication and nanofluidics. These goals will be accomplished through 2.5 days of talks and informal discussions.

The 2015 uTAS international conference will take place in Gyeongju, Korea from October 25 to October 29, 2015 (http://www.microtas2015.org/). This conferences serves as the premier forum for reporting research results in nano/microfluidics, nano/microfabrications, nanotechnology, integration, and detection technologies for life science and chemistry. Taking advantage of this opportunity, we propose to organize this mini-symposium at OIST immediately after the uTAS meeting, to bring some leading researchers in the world with the reduced cost (i.e., 3 out of the 8 proposed speakers below will attend the uTAS meeting in Korea).
