Academic Job Market Series, Module 5, Writing Diversity Statements will be held next week, December 14 (Thursday), from 4:15-5:30.

Diversity statements are becoming an increasingly common part of job application materials. Knowing how to conceptualize and then write one can greatly improve overall chances of success in a competitive job market.

Here are three recent examples of prompts from jobs posted on Science Careers (jobs.sciencecareers.org):

The diversity statement should discuss or include their past and/or potential contributions to and experience with diversity, equity and inclusion, such as mentoring, committee service, research, outreach, or teaching.

Statement of Past and/or Planned Future Contributions to Advancing Diversity and Inclusive Excellence (2-page maximum)

Description of Academic Job Market Series:

This is a series for those who are either currently in the midst of a job search for an academic position and would like to improve their existing materials, or for anyone who plans to engage in a job search on the academic market in the future. The series will cover the most common application materials required for academic jobs, as well as an introduction to the process of searching for a job itself. It is meant to be a complement to a second series on the non-academic job search. One of the main differences between the two searches in terms of application materials is the use of the CV when seeking academic jobs and the use of the résumé when the goal is to attain an industry job that is not academic. (But note that different regions of the world or different organizations may use these terms interchangeably or with variations in meaning.)

In addition to Module 5 above, and the previously held modules the series will include a final workshop:

If you plan to attend at least one of the next two workshops above, please do register. RSVPs will be sent out for each module separately for all those who have registered.

Registration will include access to the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) site for the series, which will provide access to links of carefully curated resources and hopefully some asynchronous discussions based on your needs and desires.

If you do plan to attend Module 5, please respond by the end of Monday, December 11.

You will be asked to prepare and submit a short reflective assignment on diversity statements ahead of Module 5. More information will be provided upon registration.
