Title: Transition Metal Complexes with New Electron-Rich, Sterically-Hindered PNP Pincer Ligands

Abstract:

This thesis describes the synthesis, characterization and reactivity studies of different late transition metal complexes of a new family of electron-rich, bulky PNP pincer ligands (PNP = 2,6-{R2PC(CH3)2}2-pyridine). The different chapters will describe the reactivity of nickel, rhodium and cobalt complexes with this ligand, and how their reactivity differs from the parent PNP ligand framework. This thesis will talk about the ability of this family of ligand to stabilize reactive nickel species in the +1 oxidation state, along with all the appropriate characterizations. The second chapter discusses the unusual reactivity that this family of ligand allows, especially on the para position of the pyridine ring, allowing dearomatization to occur, and even dimerization at the para position when a methyl group is on the nickel. The following chapters will discuss the activation of small molecules using Rhodium complexes of these ligands, and their characterization. Finally, one chapter will discuss on the chemistry of Cobalt complexes regarding small molecule activation and their applications in different catalytic reactions.
