Joint Event OIST-Ryukyu Shimpo “Shocking Encounter with Ants”
This is a spin-off event of Ryukyu Shimpo’s column. OIST will hold a workshop hosted by Dr. Masashi Yoshimura (Economo Unit), Coordinator of an ongoing environmental observation network project “OKEON Churamori Project”. Participants will experience of collecting ants and observing them. Discussion with Dr. Yoshimura gives the participants the new way to see nature around us.

Update Session and Safety Seminar
The 2016 Update Session on Health and Safety and Safety Seminar will be held on July 28. Guest speaker is Professor Masato Murakami, President of Shibaura Institute of Technology, who is a world-renowned researcher of super conducting materials. Maiko Furubayashi is a Postdoctoral Associate in Chris Voigt lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her PhD in Engineering from Chiba University in 2014 under the supervision of Daisuke Umeno, working on non-natural pathway construction by directed evolution.

Abstract: The manner in which infinitesimal disturbances can cause organized fluid motion to become chaotic is an intriguing phenomenon. In addition to being of great theoretical interest, laminar-to-turbulence transition is of significant engineering importance due to its role in heat transfer, its influence on momentum mixing, and its effect on drag.
