Title: Super-resolution approaches to study bacterial cell division
Abstract:
I use super resolution fluorescence microscopy to figure out how bacterial cells divide. If we can figure out that in detail, we just might be able to come up with new approaches to develop new antibiotics. Something much needed in these times of raising antibiotic resistance.
In this talk I will tell you a little bit about how I used fabricated micron-pillars of various shapes in order to reshape rod-shaped E. coli cells into unnatural shapes, like Squares, Hearts and Stars. To look at the division machinery I then used STED, that gave me an optical resolution of about 50 nm, which allowed me to get a glimpse into the nanoscale organization of the cell division machinery. The conclusion was that....oh, no wait, I'll guess you'll have to come to the talk to hear the conclusion. Cheers.
