Abstract:
Kampo, based on ancient Chinese medicine and traditionally practiced throughout Japan, is part of Japan's national health insurance program. Dr. Hattori, Director of the Kampo Scientific Strategies Division of Tsumura Research Laboratory, introduces Tsumura's strategy to determine how Kampo works in vivo. Prof. Yakabi, Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology and Vice Director of Saitama Medical Center, at Saitama Medical University Medical School, describes the latest research results about how psychological state and neural activities relate to gastrointestinal problems. Prof. Yakabi is one of the main organizers of the 17th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society of Neurogastroenterology, November 12-13 at OIST.
About the speakers:
Prof. Yakabi received his degree as medical doctor in Internal Medicine at the University of Tokyo in 1983. After working at the University of Tokyo Hospital 1985-1988 and Department of Gastroenterology of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan 1986-1988, he was appointed Associate Professor of the Third Department of Internal Medicine, Teikyo University Medical School. In 2004, he became Professor of the First Department of Internal Medicine, Saitama Medical Center, Saitama Medical University Medical School, and the following year he was also appointed Professor of the Department of Gastroenterology at the same university, where he has been Vice Director since 2012. Prof. Yakabi’s specialty is Gastroenterology, and his research focus lies in functional gastrointestinal disorders, brain-gut axis, gut hormones.
Dr. Hattori received his PhD in Pharmacology from the Meijyo University in 1991. In the same year he took up a position as a researcher in Tsumura Research Laboratories, where, he became Research Manager in 2005. In 2008 he was appointed part-time instructor at the Department of Medicine, Nagasaki University. In 2014, he was promoted to Director of Tsumura Research Laboratories, and the following year he was also appointed professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy, Hokkaido University. In 2007, he received the Tsumura Research Laboratories President’s prize for his research on the beneficial effects of rikkunshito on ghrelin secretion.
