About the workshop

As students begin to focus on scientific inquiry during their undergraduate education, they often encounter experimental science for the first time. These early years present a tremendous opportunity to engage students, and introduce them to rigorous experimental design and quantitative analysis strategies, while also introducing them to the transformative value of interdisciplinary approaches inspired by the perspectives contributed by different fields of research. This international undergraduate workshop is designed to present students with thematically related research topics in the biological sciences, from organismal to molecular resolution, which represent phenomena that illustrate fundamental principles. It is important to note that the subject matter can change from year to year, because the major goals of the curriculum are related to process rather than content. By combining scientific research presentations, foundational lectures, hands-on data collection and quantitative skills workshops, this one-week intensive course will provide opportunities for students to explore cutting edge questions with new intellectual approaches. Team problem-solving and analysis with statistical and computational tools will be used to deepen collaborative connections while demonstrating the essentials of experimental design and data interpretation.

Program Elements

Team Challenge Labs: Experimental design, execution and data analysis require the opportunity to test and experience application. This team-based design and analysis problem will not only demonstrate solutions to interrogating relevant research questions, but will also act as a substrate for team problem-solving and will culminate in team presentations to communicate interpretations and conclusions (see larger section below).

Quantitative Analysis and Experimental Design Skills Workshops: Analytical skills depend on access to training. These skill workshops will draw on experienced PhD-level instructors to deliver key tools and methods of use for the students in the course. The first workshop in statistical theory and methods will introduce students to fundamental strategies for rigorous quantitative analysis. The second workshop in data visualization and computational tools will introduce students to some available resources to propel data analysis. The final workshop will integrate concepts from the lectures and laboratories to build models of biological information processing pathways, as a means to consolidate and extend the fundamental ideas communicated throughout the week.

How to apply: 

The Application deadline is November 15, 2019. Applications will be accepted from early October 2019. Please note that the admissions process is a rolling process. Some applicants may be accepted and notified earlier than others, depending on the overall total number of applications received.
