Background: The Key Symposia are organised by the Journal of Internal Medicine and The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. These international meetings, within the research areas at the forefront of internal medicine, are arranged in honour of Professor Axel Key, who was a member of the Academy and chairman of Karolinska Institutet in the mid-19th century, and a pioneer in clinical medicine. He was also the founder of the first Swedish medical journal Medicinskt Archiv, later Acta Medica Scandinavica and, since 1989, Journal of Internal Medicine (JIM).
