Student Housing Information (For New Students)
1. Room Allocation
- Basic room allocation
【Allocation for Students (applicable to agreements entered into on or after April 1, 2024, or for the Class of 2024)】
- Pre-Proposal Students
OIST will allocate "on-campus shared furnished rooms" for prospective Pre-Proposal students. Upon acceptance, students will have the chance to create a profile and utilize a roommate matching platform. In the event a suitable roommate is not found through the platform, OIST will pair the student with others based on basic information such as gender and allocate a bedroom accordingly. Typically, room assignments will be disclosed 3 to 4 weeks prior to the scheduled arrival date.
*If you require a special room allocation due to physical or mental challenges, please contact the Graduate School (GS). Depending on your situation, we may ask you to provide relevant medical reports or documentation, authenticated by licensed practitioners, to support your request. Following this, collaborative discussions will involve representatives from Ganjuu Wellbeing Services, the OIST Health Center, and the Graduate School to determine the best means of support, including housing allocation. For more information, please refer to the Special Room Allocation Flow.
- Post-Proposal Students
Post-proposal students can opt for on-campus accommodation, with choices between shared units and 1LDK, provided there is availability. However, due to the high demand for 1LDK units, allocation of 1LDK rooms will follow a waiting list system. Post-proposal students also have an off-campus housing option with subsidy.
- Relocation with family
Students with families can apply for on-campus two-bedroom options*1; however, room allocation will be subject to availability. If no suitable on-campus rooms are available, the off-campus option*2 will be considered.
*1On-campus Housing subsidies will only be provided to enrolled students, and not family members. Thus, the monthly rent for the two-bedroom option will range from ¥72,000 to ¥93,000.
*2Off-campus housing subsidies do not apply to pre-proposal students. They begin with post-proposal students, regardless of whether they have families or not.
2. Roommate Matching Service (for shared rooms)
Similar to a bulletin board, Housing Management Section (HMS) will create a private channel to help you find a roommate. Only incoming students and current students seeking a roommate can join.
Your profile will be shared in this private channel, where members can view all profiles and search for potential roommates. You’ll also be able to communicate directly with other members on the platform.
