Useful Information

FLIGHTS
Flights and accommodation will be arranged by OIST.

CURRENCY EXCHANGE

  • Bureau de Change: No Currency Exchange Service available at either Naha domestic airport or at OIST. Money Exchange in your country before travel or at major airports (Narita/Kansai/Nagoya) is strongly recommended.
  • ATMs: OIST campus has one ATM operated by Okinawa Bank.  Cards from most Japanese domestic banks will work here.
Several ATMs for credit card cashing are also available in Naha Airport. Please be advised, however, that most credit cards issued abroad will not work. Japan is still very much a cash-only society, and its banking system is not integrsated well with overseas banks.  While there will be little time for external purchases, if you wish to purchase souvenirs, etc., bring sufficient cash in yen.  All meals are provided at OIST.

CLIMATE
Average temperature around this time of the year is 30-33°Celsius. It can rain heavily sometimes and be very humid as August is in typhoon season.  Occasionally, typhoons may prevent ground and air tavel for a day or two.

CLOTHES
OIST Workshops are usually performed in informal style (no suit and tie), thus please feel free to dress casually and travel light.  Air conditoning is set to a much warmer 25°C than the 21°C that Americans are used to.

ELECTRICITY
The AC outlet in Japan is 100 volt, and fits plugs with two parallel blades (Type A, like the US plug). Please check if the AC adapter of your laptop is compatible with Japanese style and bring a plug adapter or a voltage converter if necessary.
