Useful Information

Flights and accommodation will be arranged by OIST.

  • Bureau de Change: No Currency Exchange Service available at either Naha domestic airport or at OIST. Money Exchange in your country before travel or at major airports (Narita/Kansai/Nagoya) is strongly recommended.
  • ATMs: OIST campus has one ATM operated by Okinawa Bank.  Cards from most Japanese domestic banks will work here.
Several ATMs for credit card cashing are also available in Naha Airport. Please be advised, however, that most credit cards issued abroad will not work. Japan is still very much a cash-only society, and its banking system is not integrsated well with overseas banks.  While there will be little time for external purchases, if you wish to purchase souvenirs, etc., bring sufficient cash in yen.  All meals are provided at OIST.

Average temperature around this time of the year is 30-33°Celsius. It can rain heavily sometimes and be very humid as August is in typhoon season.  Occasionally, typhoons may prevent ground and air tavel for a day or two.

OIST Workshops are usually performed in informal style (no suit and tie), thus please feel free to dress casually and travel light.  Air conditoning is set to a much warmer 25°C than the 21°C that Americans are used to.

The AC outlet in Japan is 100 volt, and fits plugs with two parallel blades (Type A, like the US plug). Please check if the AC adapter of your laptop is compatible with Japanese style and bring a plug adapter or a voltage converter if necessary.

  • Internet: Wireless Internet available in public space. Wired LAN is available in guest rooms.
  • Amenities: Shampoo&rinse, body soap, toothbrush set, hair dryer and room slippers.
  • Laundry rooms: equipped with washer-dryers, detergent and ironing board sets.  (Yen coins)
  • Phones: Public phone available in the lobby area. A calling card is required to make a domestic/international phone call. You may wish to purchase international calling cards at a major airport as they are not provided at Seaside House. Some credit cards work by entering your credit card numbers and PIN code. Phone equipped in each guest room is for in-house calls only. The WiFi provided in Seaside House is suitable for Skype or Facetime calls instead.

OIST Seaside House has a small tennis court and a private beach.  The sea is generally alm enough to swim, although guests do so at their own risk.  There is no lifeguard, and there is a risk of an encounter with a dangerous sea creature including stinging jellyfish (including box jellies and bluebottles), or standing on a stone fish or sea urchin.  Bring reef shoes for your safety.  A limited number of snorkel sets and tennis equipment is available.
