Description

Two dimensional spatial adiabatic passage of matter waves

Abstract:

A full control of matter-wave transport is one of the key elements in some quantum metrology implementations and in the design of new quantum devices for the emerging field of atomtronics. In this context, spatial adiabatic passage (SAP) processes offer robustness, i.e., if the dynamical evolution is performed adiabatically transport will be efficient regardless of the selected specific parameter values used to drive the system and their fluctuations. In fact, SAP has been proposed for the efficient and robust transport of single atoms [1], electrons in quantum dots [2], and Bose-Einstein condensates [3] between the outermost traps of one-dimensional triple-well potentials. In addition, SAP has been reported experimentally for light beams propagating in optical waveguides coupled via the evanescent field [4,5].

Here, we will focus onto the possibilities that the extension of SAP to two dimensional systems offers for matter-wave interferometry [6], for the generation of atomic angular momentum [7], and to implement geometrical phases through tunnelling.
