Short Description:

How does your science PhD training translate into skills that are valued by an employer beyond academia? As a postdoctoral scholar, you have honed your ability to find information, communicate your research with academic and lay audiences, manage projects, teach complex ideas, mentor students, and work with diverse individuals. These are examples of transferable skills that you can communicate in your application materials and during an interview.

Learning objectives: 

    By the end of this session participants will be able to...

  • Identify transferable skills used in the lab and in research projects.
  • Communicate the value of these skills in application materials 
  • Practice communicating these transferable skills with peers

Thi Nguyen serves as associate dean for graduate career and professional development at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She assists individuals with career exploration, goal setting, and preparing for a variety of non-academic careers. Thi also designs and delivers content for workshops and online resources for research trainees on topics related to career advancement and starting careers outside of academia. She works with faculty, graduate student groups, and employers to tailor her materials and ensure they are relevant and up-to-date.

Thi has created the online job simulation library, Interactive Simulation Exercises for Career Transitions (InterSECT), and an iBiology course titled Strategy4Scientists that includes a podcast on iTunes. She has served as a guest advisor for the ScienceCareers online forum, and on a team to answer career-related questions on Reddit’s Ask Me Anything.

Before starting at Washington University in St. Louis, she served as a program director for non-academic careers at the Office of Career and Professional Development at UC San Francisco. Thi has scientific training as a postdoctoral scholar at the Gladstone Institutes at UCSF and holds a Doctorate of Neuroscience from UT Southwestern Medical Center. .
