Description

Title: Finding Your Rhythm in a Complex Acoustic Environment

Speaker: Kim Hoke, Colorado State University

Abstract: My lab adopts a systems approach to understand how robust genetic and developmental processes produce species-specific behaviors and how evolution produces diversity in communication.  Male frogs make species-typical calls in dense choruses, and female frogs use acoustic differences between males for mate choice. Our work assesses which features of calls are characteristic of individuals and how males adjust their calls based on social cues. We hope to trace how chorus dynamics emerge from individual male strategies and link those strategies to neurobiological mechanisms. We also ask how females integrate over a series of signals in this cacophony to choose mates.

Profile: Kim Hoke is a Professor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Her Ph.D. focused on developmental patterning of the retina, and her postdoctoral work turned to the neuroendocrine mechanisms of mate choice and the evolution of behavior. The Hoke lab aims to link genetic, transcriptomic, morphological, and physiological mechanisms to the striking diversity of behavior. We study genetics of parallel evolution in fish, the evolved loss of middle ears in frogs, and temporal patterning of acoustic communication. https://hokelab.weebly.com/
