Subject: RE FIELDWORK: IMPORTANT PLEASE READ

Dear Colleagues

While investigations by the Coast Guard, Office of Labour Standards and OIST Review Panel continue, marine fieldwork involving diving or snorkeling remains suspended at OIST. I apologise for the inevitable delays in your research that this will cause, we hope to have findings and recommendations from at least one of these investigations by April 2017. Please contact me directly to discuss any measures that OIST can take to mitigate the effect of this suspension on the careers of researchers or students.

All other fieldwork, marine and terrestrial will need to go through a new approval process. This is to ensure that each project has an appropriate training and safety plan. We will hold a briefing session at 4-5pm, February 3rd in B250. IF YOUR UNIT, INCLUDING VISITORS, PhD STUDENTS AND ROTATION STUDENTS, IS CURRENTLY DOING FIELDWORK, OR PLANNING TO DO FIELDWORK IN FY2017, PLEASE ATTEND OR SEND A REPRESENTATIVE. If you are carrying out several projects, feel free to bring relevant colleagues.

We will help you with the project format then they will be reviewed by a new Fieldwork Safety Committee, with appropriate external experts. This will meet for the first time in late February 2017. My hope is that all projects can be reviewed, amended if necessary, and then approved by 1st April 2017.

.

Thank you for your patience

With best wishes

Mary
