RAM2024 Panel Discussion on Conservation and Invasive Species Control in Okinawa

As part of Researcher Appreciation Month, we are inviting OIST researchers from all fields to join a unique panel discussion on environmentall challenges and conservation efforts in Okinawa. 

Leading by representatives from the Okinawa-Amami Natural Environment Office (Chief Yoshiaki Kitahashi) and Ministry of the Environment (Mr. Tsuoshi Wauke), this session will tackle issues impacting Okinawa's environment, such as:

• Invasive species control: discussing complex effects of invasive species like cats and mongooses on Okinawa's ecosystems; control technologies for introduced snakes (Protobothrops mucrosquamatus and Orthriophis taeniurus), and fireflies (Pyrocoelia atripennis).
• Water security innovations: exploring affordable solutions for removing contaminants like PFAS and desalinizing seawather during droughts.
• Safe wildlife transport: addressing the development of HEPA-filtered transport containers to safely move infectious wildlife over Okinawa's remote regions.

This panel offers an excellent opportunity for cross-disciplinary dialogue. Researchers will have a chance to exchange ideas with government officials and discuss how OIST's scientific expertise can contribute to solving environmental issues.
