Description

Genomics and Regulatory Systems Unit (Luscombe Unit) would like to invite you to a Hands-on Seminar (practical) by Dr. Steven Rosanoff European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), England. Dr. Steven Rosanoff currently works at the European Bioinformatics Institute in Cambridge, England as a database engineer and software developer for UniProt. Prior to his current position, Steven worked as an Oracle database administrator for the New York State government in the United States and he received his degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics from the University of Albany in New York.

  • DATE: Tuesday, October 14
  • TIME: 13:00-14:00
  • VENUE: C 209, Center bldg

Program

Biological introduction 15 mins

"Human transcription factor isoforms: how alternative splicing events affect their regulatory function", Dr. Alessandra Vigilante, Luscombe Group www.luscombelab.org, University College London UCL Genetics Institute, Dept of Genetics, Evolution & Environment

【abstract】

Transcription factors (TFs) represent key components of the gene regulatory machinery: they are typically DNA-binding proteins that interact with specific genomic regions in the neighbourhood of the target gene, promoting or suppressing its expression. TFs are themselves controlled both at the transcriptional level, and by post-transcriptional steps including alternative splicing, a mechanism that produces a variety of protein isoforms with potentially distinct functions from a single gene. This seminar will provide a detailed overview of the main possible alternative splicing scenario detected among alternative spliced TF protein isoforms, their classification and the impact they have on the TF regulatory activity and will introduce to some of the biological information you can retrieve via the bioinformatic platforms UniProt.

Uniprot seminar 30 mins , Uniprot practical 15 mins

“UniProt: How-To Maximize Your Functional & Structural Analysis of Proteins”, (Specific use-cases will focus on transcription factor genes), Dr. Steven Rosanoff, European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI), http://www.ebi.ac.uk/, http://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/workshop/uniprot-protein-databases-tools-oist-2014

【abstract】

UniProt provide the scientific community with a comprehensive, highly-quality, and freely accessible resource of protein sequence and functional information. This seminar will explain how UniProt annotate and cross-reference data from around the globe; show what kinds of information are available in UniProt, how to access it, and how to search the database.

During this seminar you will learn about:

  • UniProt User-Interface
  • Using Filters and Queries to search UniProt
  • UniProt BLAST/Align/ List Conversion Tools
  • Programmatic Access to UniProt using as specific-use cases transcription factor genes
