Description
Join us for this November's Internal Seminar Series, from 17:00 to 18:00 in B250, central building.
This month's seminars feature the Neural Computation Unit (Kenji Doya) and the Biological Systems Unit (Igor Goryanin).
Neural Computation Unit (Kenji Doya)
Speaker: Jun Igarashi
Title: Simulating large-scale neural networks using K supercomputer
Abstract: Neural Computation Unit has been participating in a research project of developing biomedical applications for RIKEN's "K" supercomputer. In this presentation, we first introduce the capability of K supercomputer and its availability for researchers. We then present the outline of our own project of reproducing the neural network of the cerebral cortex, the basal ganglia, and the thalamus in health and Parkinson's disease. In a benchmark trial, we realized simulation of a cortical network of over 10^9 neurons with 10^12 synapses, one of the largest in history. We also report our ongoing search for the origin of Parkinson's tremors in the combined dynamics of the brain, the spinal cord, and the musculoskeletal system.
Biological Systems Unit (Igor Goryanin)
Speaker: David Simpson
Title: Microbial fuel cell towards practical application: scale-up and performance.
Abstract: Microbial fuel cells have been attracting great attention since they can simultaneously achieve wastewater treatment and electricity generation. In this seminar we are going to present the works that have been conducted on both lab-scale and field-scale microbial fuel cells, discuss the challenges of MFC scaling-up, and report on-going results from our first pilot bioreactor performance located at an Okinawan awamori distillery site.
