[Zoom Seminar] Winds, waves, and volcanoes: geoscience education from indigenous Okinawan Music

abstract:

Okinawan immigrants from the Ryukyu Islands brought their Indigenous music to Hawai‘i in the early 1900s. Today, scientists and cultural practitioners from the Hawai‘i-Okinawa community interpreted Okinawan sailing songs for information on 18th-century geo- and climate science. We found that these songs record observations of winds, waves, and volcanoes that agree with modern observations from instrumented research. Educators can use these records to teach how our ancestors prepared for natural disasters, managed resources, and demonstrated scientific thinking. Overseas Okinawans, like those in Hawai‘i, are culturally active communities interested in such education that centers Indigenous Knowledge as a source of reputable science. Thus, Okinawan cultural practitioners can play a unique role in geoscience education in Okinawa and Hawai‘i.
