Beyond Academic Impact: What Is the Societal Contribution of Universities?

As society faces increasingly complex challenges in areas such as human and planetary health, national competitiveness, and others, there is a growing recognition of the important role that universities play in driving broader societal impact. In response to this, university ranking providers such as Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) have started to develop university rankings that encompass the societal impact of universities, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework.

Elsevier, as an information analytics business and academic publisher, is actively collaborating with the academic community to develop indicators that provide insight into the full range of a researcher's output, as well as the impact of the broader research culture on society. This seminar will provide examples of how Elsevier is working with SDGs, not only as a key data provider to both THE and QS, but also through other initiatives, such as the development of a societal impact playbook with the University of Tasmania in Australia.

The aim of this seminar is to encourage discussions on how to capture and amplify the excellent work being done at universities, to further benefit society. By showcasing best practices and highlighting the impact of universities in a broader sense, we can work towards developing a more comprehensive understanding of the role of universities in society and how they can best contribute to addressing pressing societal challenges.

About the speaker

Anders Karlsson, Ph.D.

Vice President, Global Strategic Networks, Elsevier

Anders Karlsson joined Elsevier in 2012 as Vice President, Global Strategic Networks. Before Elsevier he served as the Counselor for Science and Innovation at the Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo, Japan for five years. He is the Japan chapter chair of the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) and a steering committee member of the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) Asia Chapter. In March 2023, he will join the Board of the Swedish Foundation for the Internationalization of Higher Education and Research (STINT). He has been a member of Elsevier’s sustainability board and contributed to several of Elsevier’s reports related to Sustainability Research.

Karlsson has been a professor in Quantum Photonics at the Royal Institute of Technology - KTH, Stockholm, Sweden. His work leading a consortium on quantum information technology was awarded the EU René Descartes Research Prize in 2004. He has been Visiting Scientist at NTT Basic Research Labs, Stanford University, École Polytechnique Paris, Zhejiang University and Senior Advisor at Osaka University. He has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and a M.Sc. in Engineering Physics, both from KTH, Stockholm, Sweden.

人類と地球の健康、国家競争力など、社会がますます複雑化する課題に直面する中、大学がより広い社会的インパクトをもたらすために重要な役割を果たすという認識が広まっています。これを受けて、Times Higher Education（THE）やQuacquarelli Symonds（QS）などの大学ランキングプロバイダーは、国連の持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）を枠組みとして、大学の社会的インパクトを包括する大学ランキングの開発に着手しています。

エルゼビアは、情報分析ビジネスおよび学術出版社として、学術界と積極的に協力し、研究者のアウトプットの全容や、より広い研究文化が社会に与える影響を把握するための指標を開発しています。本セミナーでは、エルゼビアがTHEやQSへの主要データ提供者としてだけでなく、オーストラリアのタスマニア大学との社会的インパクトのプレイブック開発など、SDGsへの取り組み事例を紹介します。

本セミナーの目的は、大学で行われている優れた活動をどのように捉え、増幅し、社会に還元していくかについて議論を促すことです。ベストプラクティスを紹介し、より広い意味での大学のインパクトを強調することで、社会における大学の役割と、差し迫った社会的課題の解決に大学がどのように貢献できるかをより包括的に理解することができるようになります。

アンデルス・カールソン（Ph.D.)

エルゼビア、グローバル戦略ネットワーク担当副社長

2012年、エルゼビアに入社。エルゼビア入社以前は、在日スウェーデン大使館で5年間、科学・イノベーション担当参事官を務める。国際STM出版社協会（STM）の日本支部長、政府に対する科学的助言に関する国際ネットワーク（INGSA）アジア支部の運営委員を務める。2023年3月には、スウェーデン高等教育・研究国際化財団（STINT）の理事に就任予定。また、エルゼビアのサステナビリティ委員会のメンバーとして、サステナビリティ研究に関連するエルゼビアのいくつかの報告書に貢献しています。

スウェーデンのストックホルムにある王立工科大学（KTH）で量子フォトニクスの教授を務めています。量子情報技術に関するコンソーシアムを率いる彼の研究は、2004年にEUルネ・デカルト研究賞を受賞しています。NTT物性科学基礎研究所、スタンフォード大学、エコール・ポリテクニーク・パリ、浙江大学の客員研究員、大阪大学のシニアアドバイザーを歴任。スウェーデンのストックホルムにあるKTHで電気工学の博士号と工学物理学の修士号を取得している。
