Title:
Focused liquid jets induced by an impact: mechanism of the jets, their applications, and related research

Abstract:

Liquid jets are of great importance in various applications such as ink-jet printers and needle-free injection devices. The development of methods for generating highly viscous microjets and high-speed jets should open new doors for next-generation technologies.
In this presentation, we introduce a novel system for generating microjets of liquids with viscosities up to 100,000 cSt, which is as viscous as honey. The structure of the device employs an impulsive force that causes abrupt motion of the liquid. We have developed a physical model based on a pressure-impulse approach, which successfully describes experimental results. The jet induced by an impulsive force can be also generated by a laser pulse, resulting in supersonic microjets with speeds up to 850 m/s. The development of such systems is a starting point for novel technologies such as highly viscous ink-jet printers for printed electronics and 3D printers, and needle-free injection devices in medicine. Related research, including the development of measurement techniques and data-driven analysis will be presented by our group members.

Biography:

Yoshiyuki Tagawa did his undergraduate and graduate studies at The University of Tokyo in Japan in 2009. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Twente in the Netherlands for 2010-2012. For 2013-2019, Dr. Tagawa has been an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology and promoted to a professor in 2020. His original scientific contribution is his work in proposing a method for creating a focused liquid jet, which is a complex phenomenon based on free surface flow dynamics, bubble dynamics and microfluidics. He has been awarded as Andrea Prosperetti Award 2019, Distinguished Young Researcher 2016 in The Japanese Society of Multiphase Flow, Distinguished Young Researcher 2014 in The Japan Society of Fluid Mechanics, among others. He has served on Editorial Advisory Board in International Journal of Multiphase Flow and the national board of The Japan Society of Multiphase Flow.
