Description
Dr. Sebastiano Nicolussi Golo is visiting OIST from 2022/08/05 until 2022/10/31 through the "Theoretical Sciences Visiting Program" (TSVP). Find out more about the TSVP in this news article or the program website.
This seminar intended for a general audience and the research will be presented in an accessible manner. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to ask questions after the talk. Guests from outside OIST can join via Zoom.
Title: Sub-Riemannian Geometry Is Everywhere!
Abstract: You may never have heard of sub-Riemannian geometry, but you have already seen it. Beside the many appearances in abstract mathematics (in hyperbolic geometry, geometric group theory, theory of hypoelliptic operators), numerous models of physical processes are based on sub-Riemannian geometry, from robotics to neural networks. In my talk, I will present a list of models with the goal of teaching you to recognize sub-Riemannian geometry. If you think that your research might contain another application, please contact me: I am looking forward to talk with you!
Profile: Sebastiano Nicolussi Golo is a postdoc in mathematics at the University of Jyväskylä in Finland (EU). He works on the interface between metric analysis and Lie group theory. He has worked in sub-Riemannian geometry and later he expanded his interests to geometric measure theory on Lie groups equipped with non-Riemannian distances. He completed his Ph.D. from the University of Jyväskylä in 2017.
Language: English, no interpretation.
Target audience: General audience / everyone at OIST and beyond.
Freely accessible to all OIST members and guests without registration.
This talk will also be broadcast online via Zoom.
